A bit about DNA testing

How long will it take?

It can take 6-10 weeks for your DNA results to appear. You get a matchlist of cousins. This is like a hand of cards. Sometimes you will find close relatives listed – sometimes not. Not all search work yields successful results: sometimes there are not enough relevant DNA matches to solve the puzzle.

Can I get help with my results?

Once you have taken a DNA test, it is possible to review the matchlist and figure out which family ‘lines’ seem to be appearing several times. With some knowledge of genetic inheritance, genealogy and probability it is possible to tease out more. Some people prefer to get help to figure out their biological roots, and that is fair enough.

Things to consider...

01.

Facts?

Too often people have been told part of the story, as best it is known. Finding and examining DNA matches provides pointers to the biological truth, but it is a journey.

02.

Certainty?

Unless you have a very close DNA match, the list of other close matches could be interpreted in many ways. It takes patience and courage to pursue the truth over time.

03.

Time?

We may need to find more relatives and conduct further tests. There may be people we choose not to contact. This is an ongoing discussion as the work continues.

04.

Activity?

Your search may need you to reach out to other DNA matches and cousins, send emails, write a letter, organise a forum post or order a certificate. You’ll get support to do this.
